Icelandic Climate Action Plan

The information website CO2.is is a dynamic presentation of Iceland's 150 climate actions that were presented to the public in June 2024.

The Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Climate led the work on the plan, which was a major update of the previous plan from 2020.

Kolibri designed and produced the website, an accessible presentation of the plan for the public, media, and experts.

The challenge

Now is the time for action

Iceland is a party to the Paris Accords and participates in the joint goal of European countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. To achieve these goals, it was necessary to significantly add to actions already outlined in the previous plan from 2020.

The Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Climate conducted extensive consultations were conducted with municipalities, the business sector, and NGOs over a two-year period from 2022 to 2023. The result is an ambitious updated plan with 150 well-defined actions and measurable targets.

To present the plan and provide comprehensive information about it over the coming years, the ministry needed a website that is easy to use, performs well on all devices, and provides sufficient information to meet the needs of the public, experts, and the media.

The design

The actions are categorized into four systems, each assigned its own color. Images of the Icelandic landscape are used. Users can navigate the website based on how "torn" the graphics are. At the top layer of the navigation system, the landscape is clearer, but it becomes more indistinct as users delve deeper into the details of the actions.

The information

Skýrar upplýsingar til framtíðar

With a clear presentation of plans that are understandable to the public, media, and experts, those involved in the project believe that better alignment across society can be achieved regarding what needs to be done to meet Iceland's goals.

Kolibri designed an accessible navigation system around a relatively complex information structure with a considerable amount of jargon. It clearly outlines which actions are intended and how they are divided into different systems, categories, and subcategories. For each action, the status, timeline, and measurable emission reduction targets are highlighted, satisfying the curiosity of users.
