Kiwi.com is one of the largest travel booking engines in the world, and possibly the smartest.

Kiwi.com enlisted a team from Kolibri to redesign and develop the onboarding process for its app. The goal was to increase the number of sign-ups and give people a better understanding of the value of setting their own preferences in the app for improved results and services.

Personalized service for the trip

The Kiwi.com app links otherwise unlinked flights for better prices. People who have downloaded the app know Kiwi.com from previous transactions, reputation, or after seeing a presentation of it in the App Store. In the App Store, the screenshots are designed as promotional tiles where these key pieces of information are highlighted.

After downloading the app, users used to encounter a conventional onboarding process where they scrolled through static advertising tiles, essentially just repeating the same information as on the App Store. This was a missed opportunity to better engage people with the service.

Kolibri designed and developed a process where login, onboarding, and user setup are optimized. Instead of repetition of information, settings for the app appear, such as currency and home airport, types of travel of interests. Then, motion design with each click is used to guide the user forward – a light and comfortable experience compared to the page flipping of the advertising tiles that were used before.
